Muting a chat

Need some quiet from a busy channel or group chat? You can mute it so you won't be pinged every time someone posts.

How to mute a chat

On mobile (iOS and Android):

  1. From your inbox, swipe on the chat you want to mute.

  2. Tap Mute (on Android, you can also get there from the chat's menu).

  3. Choose how long to mute for: 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, or Indefinitely.

On web:

  1. From your chat list, open the menu (⋯) on the chat and select Mute.

  2. Choose how long to mute for: 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, or Indefinitely.

You'll know a chat is muted because it'll show a small grey bell icon.

To unmute a chat before the timer's up, just repeat the same steps and select Unmute.

What happens while a chat is muted

  • You won't get notifications for new messages.

  • The chat still marks as unread when something new comes in, you just won't be interrupted by it.

  • If someone @mentions you directly, or uses @all in the channel, you'll still be notified. Muting cuts down noise, not the messages that are meant for you.

Good to know

  • There's no custom mute length, choose from 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, or Indefinitely.

  • Muting isn't available on 1:1 chats, only channels and group chats.

  • Muting is personal to you, it doesn't affect what anyone else in the chat sees or receives, and it overrides your notification settings for that one chat.

  • If a chat is muted and also marked Away, you'll only see the muted icon.
